A novel botanical complex designed for full-spectrum immune support

Spectramune is a patented, synergistic combination of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). This combination was selected from a screening process that examined 40 different botanicals known to have immune support properties.

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub in the nightshade family that grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. The plant, particularly its root powder, has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine.

Clinical Studies Demonstrate Powerful Immune Support

Spectramune has been the subject of three human clinical studies. In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel design study, 120 healthy men and women (age 30-60) were given 250 mg or 500 mg of Spectramune or a matching placebo. The primary outcome measured was upper respiratory symptom severity via the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptoms Scale (WURSS-24). Testing of subjects was done at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 weeks. A range of biomarkers was measured at baseline and 12 weeks.

Reduced Incidence of Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI)
Subjects taking 500 mg of Spectramune experienced 23% fewer episodes of respiratory illness and 23% fewer days sick than those taking a placebo.

Improved Global, Symptom and Quality of Life Scores During Illness
During episodes of acute respiratory illness, subjects taking either 250 mg or 500 mg of Spectramune experienced 30% less severe symptoms, and those symptoms had a 23% reduction in impact on their daily activities compared to those taking placebo.

Enhanced Markers of Innate Immunity

Subjects taking Spectramune had an increased White Blood Cell (WBC) count, reflecting enhanced immune readiness and surveillance. They also had enhancement of NK cells, immune frontline defenders that improve the body’s ability to respond to threats.

In a four-week trial, healthy male and female subjects (35-60 years of age/) who self-identified with low perceived immune status consumed 500 mg/d of Spectramune versus a placebo. showed significant improvements across a broad range of immune cells – targeting innate, cell-mediated and humoral immunity.

An intensive search of traditional botanical medicine

The development of Spectramune Immune Defense Complex started with a few simple questions: “how can we create something new in the immune health space that is based on botanicals rather than traditional polysaccharides or other fibers from fungal sources?

Support Immune Function

Researchers at PLT innovation partner Laila Nutraceutical began a screening process that examined forty different botanicals known from scientific literature or traditional medicine to have the ability to support immune function.

Evaluation of Plant Extracts

The plant extracts were evaluated for:

IL-2 production
IFN gamma production
Lymphocyte proliferation in primary human peripheral blood cells

The list of plants was narrowed down to the four with the best activity in all three assays.

Ashwagandha and Haritaki

The research examined botanical extract synergies and evaluated which combination of these showed the best potential. At the end of the process, it was a 1:1 ratio of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).
