Artesa® Chickpea Protein and Flour are Verified Non-GMO by Non-GMO Project Company

New Ingredients Deliver Plant-Based Nutrition in Good Tasting, Gold-Standard Products While Enhancing Formulating and Processing

MORRISTOWN, NJ – PLT Health Solutions, Inc. announced that Artesa® Chickpea Flour and Artesa® Chickpea Protein have received non-GMO verification from the Non-GMO Project company. The verification covers raw materials, manufacturing processes, and logistics. Manufactured by Nutriati, Inc. (Richmond, VA), both ingredients address a number of issues that have prevented other nutritionally desirable pulse/legume flours and plant-based proteins from gaining widespread adoption – including taste, sensory characteristics, and formulating functionality. Primary industry interest in Artesa Chickpea Flour is as a replacement for wheat flours in gluten-free food applications because it delivers a taste profile similar to premium wheat flours, along with similar mouthfeel and texture characteristics. Artesa Chickpea Protein addresses issues of taste and formulation functionality in food, beverage and supplement systems. Non-GMO Project verification means that the Artesa Chickpea ingredients are eligible for inclusion in non-GMO products that industry analysts say will comprise over 30% of the total food market in 2018 and which is growing at nearly 13% per year.

According to Devin Stagg, Chief Operating Officer of PLT, traceability, sustainability and the ability to deliver ‘clean label’ solutions are key elements of Artesa’s value to food, beverage, and supplement manufacturers. “The chickpea also gets good marks when it comes to sustainability. Chickpeas create their own fertilizer by fixing nitrogen from the air – which means significantly lower use of chemical fertilizers and healthier soils. They also require a significantly lower use of water and pesticides in production. Chickpeas have the lowest carbon footprint of any protein starting materials. These are all issues that consumers increasingly value in the food and supplement choices they make. We’re pleased that Nutriati has been able to achieve verification by the Non-GMO Project,” he said.

According to Michael Spinelli, Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer for Nutriati, his company is driven to improve people’s food supply by offering new approaches to product development and nutrition. “We have recognized a fundamental shift taking place in the functional food and supplement community, driven by consumer purchasing habits favoring better tasting and healthier plant-based products – which at the same time are sustainably and ethically produced. The entire Nutriati team is excited to be a part of this community, working to positively impact social and environmental food issues while building a profitable and sustainable business focused on plant-based foods. Nutriati will work to make our nutritious and tasty ingredients accessible to everyone,” he said.

PLT and Nutriati will be showcasing the Artesa ingredients at Natural Products Expo West at Booth #3775. For more information, visit Artesa® Chickpea Flour and Artesa® Chickpea Protein.
