Ingredient Delivers Hydroxytyrosol – the ‘Promise of Olive Oil’ in
Food & Beverage Systems
New Orleans, LA – At IFT 2014, one of the main ingredients highlighted at PLT Health Solution’s booth was Hytolive® Olive Fruit Polyphenol. This 100% natural, patented ingredient is a solvent-free natural extraction of olive polyphenols from the by-product water of olive oil production. The primary constituent of Hytolive is hydroxytyrosol, an olive polyphenol that has been the subject of a significant body of research on the heart health benefits it confers. In 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) approved a heart health claim for olive oil based on its content of hydroxytyrosol, concluding that “a cause and effect relationship has been established between the consumption of olive oil polyphenols (standardised by the content of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives) and protection of LDL particles from oxidative damage”. The recommended addition rate of Hytolive of 100 milligrams to foods, beverages and supplements contains hydroxytyrosol equivalent to 10 olives or ½ liter of extra virgin olive oil.
According to Paul Flowerman, President & CEO of PLT Health Solutions, U.S. consumers are ready for ingredient solutions based on olives. “American consumers have a love affair with olive oil. In the last 20 years, its consumption has tripled in the United States. Most of that increase results from the popularization of the Mediterranean Diet – and the heart healthy benefits seen in olive oil,” he said. “With Hytolive, developers of foods, beverages and supplements can deliver on the promise of olive oil with a clean, sustainable ingredient that offers hydroxytyrosol in a concentrated form. It’s easy to include in any heart healthy formulation,” he added.
A high quality, label-friendly ingredient
Hytolive is an acid-free, solvent-free natural hydrolysis & chromatic separation extraction from olive fruit by-product water. This extract is filtered, clarified and evaporated to maintain consistent hydroxytyrosol content, which is standardized to a minimum of 10% or 25%. The ingredient is available as a liquid, a powder or a micronized powder. It is cGMP, Kosher and Halal compliant. From a quality standpoint, Hytolive is guaranteed to be free of pesticides and heavy metals. It is both ISO 9001 and 14001 certified and HACCP certified. For food and beverage formulations, Hytolive is considered GRAS. It is a formulation-friendly ingredient since it is stable at high temperatures, has shelf-life stability of two years and has a minimal impact on formulation organoleptic properties. It can appear on labels as “olive fruit” or “olive fruit polyphenols”.
Responding to “Med Diet” Enthusiasm
According to Flowerman, consumer products companies can use Hytolive to take advantage of renewed interest in the Mediterranean Diet and new scientific studies that are coming out seemingly monthly on the heart health benefits of the Med Diet, olives and olive oil. “We see Hytolive as a natural fit for any product that was looking to support heart health. We also see it as a natural complement to any product that contains Omega-3 fatty acids – since you’d have two major elements of the Med Diet together at that point. With Omega-3s like fish oils, there is an added benefit to including Hytolive in the formulation, as a number of studies have shown that hydroxytyrosol – because of its antioxidant potential – prevents oxidative deterioration in foodstuffs with fish lipids. Add these benefits to the implicit trust and fondness for olive oil that people have, and you have a winning market opportunity,” he said.
