A Novel Extract of Saffron

Supresa is an extract of Crocus sativus L. saffron stigmas, is rich in safranal, crocin and picrocin. This proprietary extract is standardized to >0.3% safranal. Supresa was developed to support weight management, by improving emotional wellbeing and decreasing snacking behavior. Research that Builds Trust with Consumers

Supresa induces a feeling of well-being and stress reduction to address the source of stress-related overeating and snacking – a different mechanism of action for weight management from other weight management ingredients.

In a study conducted with 60 healthy, only slightly overweight women (BMI 25-30) who were between 25-45 years old, Supresa intake over t8 weeks resulted in significantly greater body weight reduction than the placebo group. Supresa decreased snacking by 55% compared to a 28% reduction by the placebo group. The decrease in appetite was 69% in the Supresa group versus 54% in the placebo group. There were no reports of side effects in the study groups, and compliance with the Supresa regimen was excellent.

A double-blind placebo-controlled study shows that Supresa may decrease hunger, and reduce snacking between meals. Clinical studies have shown that women taking Supresa report decreased hunger. Weight loss has also been demonstrated.

Crocus sativus L., known as saffron, is a plant whose dried stigmas are a popular spice and food condiment renowned for its color, aroma, and flavor. Supresa is made from selected partners involved with saffron harvest.

A Unique Mechanism of Action

Many ingredients designed to inhibit the desire to snack act on physiological or hormonal factors. Supresa’s clinically studied formula improves levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. The proposed mechanism of action through which Supresa is thought to exert efficacy is by serotonin reuptake inhibition (Perovic, 1995 unpublished data), whereby a sense of wellbeing is achieved. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that influences satiety, appetite, mood, compulsiveness and anxiety. It is notable that Supresa consistently shows greater than 50% inhibition of serotonin reuptake from lot-to-lot testing, whereas the same results were not obtained from generic saffron extracts (unpublished data on file).
